Moomintroll

Moomintroll - a fairly naive character but also gifted with a heart of gold. He is featured in all the books except "Moominland in October" but he plays the lead in "The Moominwinter".

(...) One Thursday, when the heat wave was already fading, from a small pond filled with water of brown color and placed onto the right from the trees where the hammock of Moominpappa was hanging, Moomintroll fished out a small dragon. Of course it was not his intention to fish out a dragon. All he tried to do was catch some of the small creatures crawling at the bottom in the mud. He wanted to examine the way the moved their limbs and check if some of them really swam backwards.(...)

Moominpappa - a type of a hopeless romantic and dreamer. An author of the book featuring himself entitled "The exploits of Moominpappa". In the volume "Moominpappa at sea" he forces his family to leave their own home and settle in a deserted lighthouse on a small, rocky island. There Moominpappa occupies himself mostly with fishing and philosophical contemplation of the sea.

(...) Moominpappa had caught a cold in the middle of a sweltering summer. He didn't want to drink hot milk with onion and sugar and he didn't want to go to bed as well. He just sat on the swing in the garden, wiped his nose every minute and claimed that cigars have an awful taste. He has never been sick before, so he took it very seriously(...)

Moominmamma

Moominmamma - an extremely indulgent person, who bears her family's strange going-ons with unflagging patience. She does not appear only in "Moominvalley in November" and in "Moominland Midwinter" she mainly sleeps.

(...) Moominmamma showed the dirty dishes under the bed to make the room look more tidy and she went outside wanting to seek a peace of earth. It was very important. She searched and searched. She went round the hill where the lighthouse stood, then walked across the moorland to the place where the moss grew; finally she circled the scrub and plunged herself between the aspens. She walked and walked on top of the warm, peaty ground but there was no sign of earth anywhere(...)

Snufkin - a very self-dependent character who does not abide by any given rules. As can be drawn fro his name (meaning "loiterer") he is much of a rolling stone.

(...) Snufkin was smelling the air with his nose upturned, it was cold as iron. There was a fragrance of electricity in it. Thunderbolts struck again and again with enormous flickering tufts like collateral light poles, the whole valley lighted up from their glowing. Snufkin stamped his feet with joy and admiration. He was expecting the wind and rain but they still were not coming. It just kept rumbling in between the mountain peeks like there were enormous and heavy spheres rolling back and forth; there also was a smell of burning in the air(...)

Snufkin

Mymble

Mymble - a Snufkin-like individual, but with no liking for traveling. You can mostly find out about her from The Moominvalley in November".

(...) There is nothing more simple and enjoyable than to feel comfortable. Mymble did not really care about the people she had met and whom she hardly recalled later anyway, above all she never tried to interfere with their matters. She just kept observing them and their problems with amused surprise (...) It was raining outside. In a few hours she would be just hungry enough to eat the supper prepared by Fillyjonk and maybe she would even be in the mood for talking with someone. As for now she did not have to do anything, she could plunge herself into the warmth surrounding her, the whole world was a large, soft blanket which Mymble was muffled up in, everything else stayed outside. Mymble never had any dreams, she would fall asleep when she wanted to and wake up when it was worth her while(...)

Little My - an outstandingly malicious and meddle-some character. Her curiosity can sometimes be even dangerous. She mentions only what she really means and takes trips wherever she wants to or where she is not allowed to go. She is Mymble's little sister.

(...) - My grandma is all undergrown by now - said My casually - She is sitting over there, in the living room. Or rather what is left of her. She looks like a big, green pile of mushrooms and you can recognize her because of her whiskers sticking out on one side. Better move that carpet towards the door. Provided that improves anything. (...) Deep inside the house the clock was ticking away. - That is the sound the mushrooms make when they grow - explained My - They grow and grow until they push out the door and get all over you(...)

Little My

Sniff

Sniff - ta childish but disarming character. He is inclined to collect things (with particular regard to trinkets). You can mostly find out about him from "Comet in Moominland".

(...) - There is one very important thing when dealing with comets and that is: not to be too choosey while shopping. Sniff! Drink your lemonade at once! Sniff had drank the whole bottle in one draught but then he probably choked because strange sounds had met their ears and then the lemonade made its way back onto the carpet. - I have threw up - wailed Sniff with reproach. - He does it all the time - explained Moomin - I guess will be going now? (...)

Snork Maiden - a person revealing a great deal of female vanity. She loves jewellery and her own reflection. Moomin's great love.

(...) - Misabel should change her hairstyle - said Mymble - The parting in the middle does not suit her. - And she cannot have a fringe as well - decided the Snork Maiden and tousled the soft hair she had between her ears. She also smoothed the tassel at the end of her tail and checked if the down on her back set properly - Is it nice to be furry all over? - asked Mymble.
- Very nice - confirmed the Snork Maiden with pleasure. - Misabel, are you furry?. Misabel did not answer(...)

Snork Maiden

Snork

Snork - The Snork Maiden's brother. An individual reavealing worship for management and arranging meetings. He maniacally writes down things in his notebook. You can get to know him best by reading "Comet in Moominland".

(...) The Snork crawled in the thick undergrowth. He had fake teeth made of orange peels. He was the Enemy. - Tarzan hungry! - shouted Moomintroll climbing the liana - Tarzan eat now! - What did he say? - asked Sniff. - He said he was hungry - explained the Snork Maiden. - It is in English. Everybody, who arrives to jungle speak English. - Now I'm going to kidnap Jane! - screamed the Snork dragging the Snork Maiden to the burrow under rthe table under the living room. (...)
